Description

Finest Known 1846 Quarter Eagle, MS63 PCGS

1846 $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. A generally well struck Quarter Eagle that has only a hint of weakness of definition on the eagle's left (facing) leg and the right claw. The surfaces are rather prooflike, and the right periphery has a blush of rich golden-brown patina. A few unimportant handling marks in the fields account for the grade. The 1846 is a much better date within the series. Just 21,598 pieces were struck, and only 63 examples have been certified by PCGS in all grades in their 17 years of existence. Of those, a mere six coins mustered a Mint State grade, with none above MS62 aside from the present Select example. The NGC population report for the issue ends with a solitary MS62 coin, which makes this piece the finest certified.
Ex: 1987 G.N.A. Sale (Mid-American, 5/1987), lot 1068, where it realized $2,750.
