Description
1846-C Quarter Eagle, Well-Struck MS62
Rare in All Grades
1846-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 1. A fire in July, 1844
closed the Charlotte Mint until 1846, limiting coin production. The
1846-C quarter eagle, from a sparse mintage of 4,808 pieces, is
therefore rare in all grades. The fire is also presumably
responsible for the extensive die rust seen on each side of all
surviving 1846-C quarter eagles, as the unused dies accumulated
rust on their surfaces, which of course transferred to each of the
coins struck from these dies.NGC and PCGS have seen 130 pieces in all grades, only 11 of which are in mint condition, the single finest being MS64. The present coin is one of four MS62s, with just three finer, two MS63s and an MS64. The striking details are not complete but better than one might imagine given the state of the dies used. The surfaces are bright overall with lighter green-gold color that shows an attractive intermingling of orange. A pinscratch above star 12 pedigrees the coin. Census: 2 in 62, 1 finer (3/14).
