Description

Rare Choice Uncirculated 1846-C Quarter Eagle, Ex: Bass

1846-C $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Formerly offered as lot 7045 in our November 2000 Santa Clara Sale, where it was described as, "Even though it successfully reopened after the July 28, 1844 fire, the Charlotte mint managed to strike only 4,808 quarter eagles in 1846. This coin exhibits a typically strong strike with a remarkable amount of detail displayed on the hair, star radials, and feathers. The eagle's left (facing) leg, however, is slightly flat. The bright, yellow-gold surfaces carry abrasions that befit a Choice specimen, with only one worthy of singular mention, that being located on Liberty's cheek. Since the mint used heavily rusted dies to coin this issue, regions of granularity are evident around the date, within portions of the legends on the reverse, and around the upper obverse rim. A prized, condition rarity from the Tarheel state that belongs in a superior collection of Charlotte gold coinage."
