    Description

    1846-D Quarter Eagle, XF45
    Rare Reverse of 1845-D

1846-D $2 1/2 XF45 PCGS. Variety 8-J. A previously unknown die combination, Variety 8-J pairs the High Date 1846-D obverse with the reverse of 1845-D. Despite a small mintage of 19,303 pieces, five different die marriages are known for this Dahlonega type issue. The present wheat-gold Choice XF quarter eagle has a good strike except on the eagle's neck. Traces of luster persist, and marks are inoffensive for the grade.(Registry values: P2)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25H3, PCGS# 7742)
