Description

Rarely Seen 1846-O Quarter Eagle, MS64
Probably Third Finest Known

1846-O $2 1/2 MS64 NGC. Variety Two. The mintage of 62,000 pieces for the 1846-O quarter eagle belies its true scarcity. Only 100-110 pieces are believed known today in all grades. High grade examples are difficult to locate, but there are several notable high grade pieces that were obviously set aside at the time of production. The finest known is an MS66 from the Pittman Collection, and it is considered the finest O-mint quarter eagle known. Second finest is the Bass MS64. This seems to be a coin that was unknown to Doug Winter when he wrote his 2006 update of his O-mint gold reference as it does not appear in the Significant Pieces Known section.
Variety Two 1846-O quarter eagles are recognized by the arrow feathers that enter the top of the mintmark. Coins of this variety are often seen with weak central details. Both the hair curls around Liberty's face and the feathers on the eagle are notably soft. Otherwise, the surfaces have resplendent mint luster and a hint of semiprooflikeness in the fields. The most obvious mark for tracing the pedigree of this coin is a short, shallow abrasion in front of the ear of Liberty. The bright yellow-gold color has a light overlay of reddish patina.(Registry values: P2)
