Description

Near-Gem 1847-C Quarter Eagle
Frosty and Boldly Struck

1847-C $2 1/2 MS64 NGC. Variety 1. The only known dies for this date. The production of 23,226 examples of the 1847-C quarter eagle is among the highest Charlotte Mint totals for any issue in the series. Only in 1843 did Charlotte produce more quarter eagles, but the 1843-Cs comprise two major varieties, so some consider the 1847-C to have the highest mintage of any issue. This is an instance where mintage actually relates to the number known today. This near-Gem is tied with a few other pieces as the finest known, and it is a top-quality piece, The surfaces are boldly struck -- highly unusual among Charlotte Mint coinage -- and it has fully brilliant and frosty green-gold luster. A few light handling marks are noted in the fields. Census: 3 in 64, 0 finer (11/11).
