Description
1848-D Quarter Eagle, MS61
Challenging Date in Mint State
1848-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 10-M. From a small mintage
of 13,771 pieces, the 1848-D quarter eagle is still one of the more
available issues from the Dahlonega Mint. Doug Winter believes the
surviving population may total 175-200 examples, but only 9-11
specimens are in Mint State grades. Population data may be inflated
by resubmissions. The present coin is sharply struck and lustrous,
with bright semiprooflike fields. A scattering of insignificant
handling marks on the reverse is consistent with the grade. Census:
8 in 61, 12 finer (2/10).From The Lucy Llewellyn Collection of Southern Gold.(Registry values: P2)
