Description

Elusive Mint State 1848-D Quarter Eagle

1848-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 10-N, the Low Mintmark variety. While specimens of this issue appear with some regularity in the marketplace, most generally grade in the range of Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. Mint State coins are quite rare and elusive. The Low Mintmark variety is considerably scarcer than the High Mintmark variety. It is distinguished by the arrow feathers which pass halfway through the mintmark, and the lower serif of the D which nearly joins the 1 in the fraction. This elusive piece offers lustrous green-gold surfaces. A couple of mint-made die irregularities show on the obverse--a small planchet lamination and two dotlike die bumps near star 3, along with some die crumbling at star 5--but considerable eye appeal is present.(Registry values: P2)
