1849-C Quarter Eagle, AU53
Scarce Date, Attractive Surfaces
1849-C $2 1/2 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1, the only known dies for
the date. The 1849-C quarter eagle boasts a low mintage of 10,220
pieces, and examples are scarce in all grades today. Estimates of
the surviving population range from 125 to 150 pieces. Only 30 to
40 specimens are extant in AU grades. The present coin displays
attractive green-gold surfaces, with a minimum number of abrasions.
The peripheral design elements are strongly impressed, with a
little softness evident on the centers. Population: 8 in 53, 21
