Description

1849-C Quarter Eagle, Exceptional MS61
Brightly Lustrous and Minimally Marked
Only One Finer at NGC

1849-C $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. The only known variety. The 1849-C is one of the scarcest dates in all grades for Charlotte Mint quarter eagles, as might be expected from its small mintage of just over 10,000 pieces. Most surviving examples are in Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated grades. A mere 10 examples have been graded Mint State by NGC and PCGS, confined mostly to MS60 and MS61.

The 1849-C is usually heavily abraded and displays subdued luster. Both sides of this MS61 coin, however, yield bright luster and reveal significantly fewer marks than what might be expected for the designated grade. We mention a very thin, unobtrusive diagonal linear mark solely for identification purposes. The design elements are sharply struck save for the typical softness on the eagle's left (facing) leg. This is an exceptional piece for the grade and the issue, and as such will command a generous bid. Census: 4 in 61, 1 finer (11/13).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25HE, PCGS# 7753, Greysheet# 8360)
