Description
Famous Gem 1849-C Quarter Eagle
The Bass Example
1849-C $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. Variety 1. As one might expect, any
Charlotte quarter eagle graded MS65 by one of the two major
services is exceedingly rare. Off the top of our collective heads,
we can think of just a handful: the Elrod 1842-C, a pair of Gem
1843-C Large Dates, the present 1849-C, and the Bass 1855-C (which
is also part of this collection) and offered a few pages further
into this memorable catalog. The 1849-C that we offer here is
literally "as struck" with glowing light yellow-gold color,
glittering surfaces that are free of any significant non-Mint made
marks and a quality of strike that is almost unheard of for the
date. This is far and away the finest known 1849-C quarter eagle
and, it goes without saying, a highlight of the Cherokee
Collection. The 1849-C is one of the rarest Charlotte quarter eagles in Uncirculated. We are aware of just four that qualify as such. The present example brought a remarkable $103,500 in its last auction appearance, smashing the previous auction record of $39,100 which was set by this same coin in the Bass II sale held in 1999.
Ex: Stack's (5/1968), lot 712; Harry Bass Collection; Bass II (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 422, where it brought $39,100 as an MS62; Baltimore Auction (Bowers and Merena, 3/2010), lot 3609, where it realized $103,500.
