Scarce AU55 1849-D Quarter Eagle

1849-D $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Variety 11-M. This is the High Date variant and the more frequently seen of the two varieties. The 1849-D is one of the scarcest D-mint quarter eagles from the 1840s. Of the 10,945 pieces struck, only 115-135 are believed extant today in all grades, the majority of which are VF-XF. This piece is generally well struck, except on the neck of the eagle, and the surfaces display rich reddish patina around the devices. A couple of field marks are located on the obverse.(Registry values: P2)
