Description

Rare Mint State 1849-D Quarter Eagle

1849-D $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 11-M. The 1849-D (10,945 coins produced) is similar in overall rarity to the 1848-D (13,771 pieces produced). The former issue, however, is rarer in high (AU-Mint State) grades. The two major grading services report 16 coins in Mint State (11/06), but when one allows for resubmissions, we still cannot overstate the high grade rarity of this issue. While this issue is not as well produced as the 1846-1848 quarter eagles from the Dahlonega Mint, the present example displays overall sharp definition. In fact, there are really no ill-defined features, and the yellow-gold surfaces show appreciable brightness in the fields. Scattered abrasions are consistent with the MS62 grade level, and the only noteworthy pedigree marker is a pinscratch in the lower right reverse field at the tip of the olive branch.(Registry values: P2)
