    Rare This Fine

    1850-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. A single obverse and two reverses were employed to strike 9,148 quarter eagles at the Charlotte Mint in 1850. This variety, the more available of the two, has the C mintmark above the 1 in the fraction. Winter provides a survival estimate of 175 to 225 pieces in his 2008 reference, including 36 to 44 examples in all AU grades. This greenish-gold near-Mint two and a half dollar has strong detail on the outer elements with typical softness on the middle curls and the eagle's left leg. Census: 25 in 58, 21 finer (6/17).(Registry values: P2)
