Description
1850-D Quarter Eagle, MS61+
Rare Variety 14-M
1850-D $2 1/2 MS61+ NGC. Variety 14-M. This variety is
unlisted in the latest Winter reference published (2003), but it
will be included in his next reference. This rare variety is
characterized by the date being entered slightly further to the
left than on 13-N, and the 1 is centered over a dentil. While the
1850-D is the most available D-mint quarter eagle from the 1850s,
it is still considerably rarer than the common issues from the
1840s. Only 175-225 pieces are believed known in all grades with a
paltry three to five coins in Uncirculated grades. This example is remarkably well-struck for the issue, showing only the slightest softness on the eagle's left (facing) leg. The yellow-gold surfaces display a light reddish accent, and no mentionable abrasions appear on either side.(Registry values: P2)
