Description

1850-D Variety 13-N Quarter Eagle, MS62
Tied for the Finest at PCGS

1850-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 13-N. The history of American gold rushes transitioned from southeast to west at about the time this coin was struck. Georgia and the Carolinas enjoyed substantial gold production over the previous three decades, while the California gold rush was in full swing, and gold had yet to be discovered in Colorado. The Dahlonega Mint produced 12,148 quarter eagles in 1850, although most survivors are circulated. Doug Winter estimates that only three to five Mint State pieces survive.

This example appears to be a new specimen, different from any of the four pieces Winter records as the finest known to him. Typical of most, this example shows weakness at the hair line below IBER, and on the eagle's right (left facing) leg. The surfaces are bright yellow with faint field reflectivity. An exceptional example that may qualify as the finest known 1850-D quarter eagle. Population: 3 in 62, 0 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P2)
