Description

Sparkling 1850-O Two and a Half, MS63
Only One Graded Finer at PCGS

1850-O $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. CAC. The mintage of the 1850-O quarter eagle is a deceptively large 84,000 pieces, but the issue is scarce in all grades and rare in Mint State. The issue is another strike-challenged O-mint issue, and most survivors saw heavy circulation as well. Due to the strike difficulties, remaining mint luster is usually the key grading criterion. This example offers bright, sparkling yellow-gold surfaces with just a tinge of green. The strike is soft on the eagle's neck, the left (facing) wing at the juncture of the shield, and the left leg. Minor abrasions consistent with the grade appear in the right obverse field and the upper reverse field. This piece, with the CAC green label, is tied with three others so certified at PCGS, and there is one finer (9/10). An elusive antebellum O-mint issue, this piece should stir some excitement when it crosses the auction block.(Registry values: P2)
