    Description

    1851-C Quarter Eagle, AU53
    'Crusty Gold' Surfaces

1851-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 1. Only a single pair of dies was required to strike the 14,923 examples of the 1851-C quarter eagle. The surfaces on this AU53 offer an original "crusty gold" appearance, amber-gold ceding to deeper brownish-gold near the rims and device edges. Scattered abrasions are light, and the strike weakness on the eagle's left (facing) leg are typical for the issue. Census: 14 in 53, 48 finer (8/16).
