    Description

1851-D $2 1/2 -- 180 Degree Rotated Reverse -- AU53 PCGS Secure. Variety 15-N. The 1851-D is not known for medal turn alignment. There is no mention of die rotations in Douglas Winter's Dahlonega reference, and a search of our online auction records failed to locate another example. It may be that the coiner quickly recognized the incorrect alignment and stopped the press. This is a rare-date straw-gold quarter eagle with smooth and slightly luminous surfaces. The centers show moderate incompleteness usual for the remote branch facility.(Registry values: P2)
