    1851-D Quarter Eagle, Appealing AU55

    1851-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Variety 15-N, the lone die pair employed for the issue of 11,264 pieces of this unloved denomination. The 1851-D has a better strike overall than the two previous D-mint issues, and this example is fairly well-struck on the obverse, even though the eagle's left (facing) thigh on the reverse is somewhat weak. The surfaces are lustrous yellow-gold with few mentionable abrasions, just slight wear. Population: 5 in 55, 7 finer. CAC: 1 in 55, 3 finer (7/16).(Registry values: P2)
