    Description

    1851-D Two and a Half, AU58
    Scarce, Lower Mintage D-Mint

1851-D $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Variety 15-N. Well-struck on the eagle's wings and the hair above the coronet. The lower half of the eagle and the curls near the ear show moderate softness, customary for this remote branch mint. A light mark on the cheek; otherwise a clean and unblemished example of this challenging issue. Although Dahlonega struck more than 60,000 half eagles in 1851, the production of quarter eagles was much less generous. Only 11,264 pieces were struck. Of that original number it is estimated that 100-125 pieces are known today in all grades, the vast majority in VF-XF.(Registry values: P2)
