Description

1851-O Two and a Half, MS61
Extremely Scarce in Mint State

1851-O $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 2. Normal date. While the 1851-O is relatively available among the New Orleans quarter eagle dates, it becomes rare in Mint State. Two die varieties are known -- one displays a widely repunched date, and the other a normal date without repunching. Somewhat surprisingly, the normal date is scarcer than the repunched date. This Mint State example displays partially prooflike fields and deep green-gold color that lightens around the central devices. The strike is sharp, showing only minor weakness on the eagle's head and neck. Marks are few and non-distracting. Census: 25 in 61, 16 finer (9/23).(Registry values: P2)
