Description

MS61 1851-O Quarter Eagle With Boldly Repunched Date

1851-O $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Breen-6214, Doubled Date. The mintage of O-mint quarter eagles was nearly twice that of the previous year's emission, despite which the 1851-O is still rare in Mint State. This example has pretty green-gold surfaces with good luster and a few moderate abrasions.
This is an early state of the Doubled Date obverse, in which all four numerals are significantly doubling from a first punching that was too low and sloping downward from left to right. The effect is that the first 1 shows tips of second serifs to the left of the final serifs, while the last 1 shows an entire digit, considerably lower and out of line with the final 1. Douglas Winter says of the variety, "Examples with strong repunching on all four digits are scarce and should sell for a premium over those that have it on only the 51 or the final digit."(Registry values: P2)
