Description

Select 1851-O Quarter Eagle, Ex: Bass
Dramatically Repunched Date

1851-O $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. Variety 1. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. The repunched date on obverse distinguishes the two known varieties, which share a common reverse. The mintmark is considerably left of the fletchings, and the top of the fraction bar is slightly right of center of the mintmark. Prominent numismatic gold researcher and collector par excellence Harry Bass managed to assemble what Garrett and Guth call a "mini-hoard" of this issue, 10 pieces offered over a period of two years. The date repunching on this piece is most visible under the base of the 1, but all four digits are repunched. Garrett and Guth again: "These coins are among some of the most dramatic examples of repunching for the era." The surfaces display light yellow-gold coloration complementing a touch of frostiness on the semireflective surfaces. The eagle shows considerable softness on the left (facing) leg, but the portrait of Liberty is better-defined on this lightly marked and attractive piece. Population: 3 in 63, 1 finer (8/11).
Ex: Paramount (11/1971), lot 1013; Harry W. Bass, Jr. (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 449 (then graded MS61).
