Description

1852-C Quarter Eagle, MS61
Low-Mintage Branch Mint Issue

1852-C $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1. The 1852-C Liberty quarter eagle claims a small mintage of 9,772 pieces and most examples circulated heavily in the regional economy because no quarter eagles were struck at Charlotte the following year. The typical example seen today is in the VF-XF grade range, with numerous abrasions, a weak strike, and insipid mint luster. The surviving population numbers 115-165 examples in all grades, according to Doug Winter, and Mint State specimens are very rare. The present coin is an attractive MS61 example, with well-detailed design elements that show a touch of the usual softness on the central devices. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lustrous and show a minimum number of minor contact marks for the grade. Eye appeal is quite strong for this issue. Population: 5 in 61, 2 finer (11/15).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25HS, PCGS# 7764, Greysheet# 8368)
