Description

Condition Census 1852-C Quarter Eagle, MS61

1852-C $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1. In 1852 most of the gold coinage action was in Philadelphia and New Orleans, which were churning out large numbers of gold dollars through double eagles. Even the faraway branch mints in Charlotte and Dahlonega were more focused on half eagle production, managing a respectable 75,574 coins at the former and 91,584 at the latter, respectively. The quarter eagles were once again the red-headed stepchild, in the case of the C-mint issue produced only to the extent of 9,772 coins. In the following year, no C-mint quarter eagles were struck at all, so most of the 1852-C coins circulated. The 1852-C is rare in Mint State. PCGS has certified only three coins in MS61 and one in MS63, including some likely resubmissions (9/09). On this piece the usually seen mint-made surface roughness appears slightly on the hair under the coronet, and around the leaves and branches on the reverse. A few small field abrasions account for the grade, along with a couple of wispy scrapes on the reverse above the eagle. The planchet is one of the nicer ones we have seen for this issue, with consistent yellow-gold color, good luster, and lots of appeal. Population: 3 in 61, 1 finer (9/09).(Registry values: P2)
