Scarce, Low Mintage Date

1853-D $2 1/2 VF30 PCGS. Variety 15-M, the only dies known for the date. Only 3,178 quarter eagles were coined at the Dahlonega Mint in 1853. The issue is very scarce today, with an estimated surviving population of just 85-95 pieces. Most examples seen are in the VF-XF range, and Doug Winter suggests perhaps 29-32 specimens are known in VF grades. The present coin shows moderate even wear on the surfaces, with all major design elements distinct and plainly visible. Abrasions are minimal for the grade. Population: 2 in 30, 52 finer (2/10).
