Description

Choice XF 1855-D Quarter Eagle
The Scarcest D-Mint Two and a Half

1855-D $2 1/2 XF45 PCGS. Variety 18-M. One of just 1,123 pieces coined of this issue, easily the most difficult condition rarity of the Dahlonega quarter eagles. Only 45-55 pieces are believed known in all grades, and the 1855-D is first in the Dahlonega quarter eagle series in both overall rarity and high grade rarity. This is a pleasing copper-gold XF coin with a notable Mint-made planchet lamination that extends from the obverse rim at 8 o'clock almost to Liberty's ear, but such laminations are commonly seen on 1855-D quarter eagles. Otherwise, the surfaces are free from any distractions. The striking details are weak as usual, with die crumbling seen on the denticles on each side.
