Description

Important Premium Gem 1856 Quarter Eagle
Ex: Bass

1856 $2 1/2 MS66 PCGS. This heavily minted pre-Civil War issue has a handful of pieces above the Gem level in the PCGS Population Report, which increases its importance to the collector who wishes to assemble the ultimate gold type set. This famously pedigreed piece is primarily yellow-gold with only a single, trivial fault below Liberty's chin. The present cataloger sees no need to disagree with the coin's description in Bass II: "A splendid eye-appealing coin with rich, smooth, satiny lustre on obverse and reverse, the latter side challenging perfection." Population: 3 in 66, 1 finer (7/08).
