Description

1856-C Two and a Half, XF45
Rare Charlotte Issue

1856-C $2 1/2 XF45 NGC. Winter-1. One die pair was used to strike all 7,913 quarter eagles that the Charlotte Mint produced in 1856. Doug Winter in Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, third edition, considers the 1856-C "one of the worst-struck coins of any denomination from the Charlotte Mint." Additionally, only 95 to 125 pieces survive in all grades, making it one of the rarest quarter eagles from this mint. This Choice XF example is at the same time typical of the issue in terms of its softly struck central devices and above-average in terms of its eye appeal. Uniform antique-gold surfaces yield hints of luster and show only light handling marks, with no distracting abrasions.(Registry values: P2)
