Description
1856-D $2 1/2 -- Plugged -- PCGS Genuine Secure. VF Details. Variety 20-N. The lowest mintage of any issue from the Georgian facility, a mere 874 pieces. Douglas Winter refers to it as "the single rarest coin of any denomination ever produced at the Dahlonega Mint." He also states the 1856-D quarter eagles are "the single worst struck United States gold coins from any mint or era." The present lot provides an important opportunity to obtain an affordable example. A hole is crudely plugged and repaired between stars 6 and 7, and on the reverse near the denomination. The apricot-gold surfaces are glossy and mildly bright.Note for clients in the European Union: This lot is considered by the European Union to be “investment gold”. We believe that it meets the criteria established in Article 344(1), point (2) of Council Directive 2006/112/EC and thus should be exempt from import VAT regardless of the selling price. Any questions or concerns about VAT should be addressed to your accountant or local tax authority.
