Description
1856-S Two and a Half, Very Scarce MS61
First Collectible S-Mint Quarter Eagle
1856-S $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. The San Francisco Mint produced just
246 quarter eagles in 1854, none in 1855, and 72,120 in 1856,
making that third-year date the first collectible example from the
newly established Mint. Both sides are fully lustrous with rich
orange patina over medium yellow-gold surfaces. The quarter eagle
format suited the West Coast facility, since it is sharply struck
and well-produced overall. Only a few minute ticks exist on the
smooth and attractive surfaces. Census: 10 in 61, 9 finer
(10/17).Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 10/2009), lot 1314.
