    1857-D Quarter Eagle, AU58
    Pleasing, Problem-Free Type Example

1857-D $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Variety 20-M. The 1857-D is smack in the middle of all D-mint quarter eagles in terms of overall rarity. Even though the mintage was only 2,364 pieces, it is occasionally available in AU or lower-end Uncirculated. An estimated 110-130 pieces are believed known in all grades. The usually seen fine die cracks are present in the date area on this upper-end piece. The surfaces retain a significant amount of mint luster around the devices, and the coin overall has a light reddish cast with green-gold underneath. The strike is strong throughout, as often seen on this issue, and the only identifying mark is a smudge of grease that was struck into the planchet at the time of manufacture below the eagle's left (facing) wing.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25JD, PCGS# 7783)
