    Impressive AU58 1857-D Quarter Eagle

1857-D $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Variety 20-M. An extremely impressive example of this rare Dahlonega quarter eagle, one that initially appears to be Uncirculated. The strike is bold, as usually found on this issue, save for a hint of softness on the eagle's neck. That area, the upper wingtips, and the hair below the coronet show slight wear. The luster is intense, with some cameo effect against the devices, and the color is an attractive green-gold. A few stray ticks and abrasions are consistent with a coin that saw light circulation before some farsighted early numismatist plucked it out of circulation. Population: 20 in 58, 14 finer (1/06).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25JD, PCGS# 7783)
