    Description

    MS61 1857-D Quarter Eagle
    Bold Sun-Yellow Luster

1857-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 20-M. Sole die pair for the year. The 1857-D quarter eagle more than tripled the previous year's mintage, though its production only amounted to 2,364 pieces. This MS61 example offers uncommonly high eye appeal for the date (and for any piece of Dahlonega gold, for that matter), thanks to bold sun-yellow luster and a sharpness of strike that is the complete opposite of the previous issue's general look. Wispy abrasions in the fields and a few small rim irregularities contribute to the grade, but the overall appearance is grand. Census: 9 in 61, 5 finer (8/11).
