    Description

Select Mint State 1857-O Quarter Eagle
    Significant Condition Rarity

1857-O $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Variety 1. Sole dies. The 1857-O is a challenging but largely unappreciated Coronet quarter eagle issue. The mintage of 34,000 pieces does not attract immediate attention, but the attrition rate for this issue was extremely high. AU examples are scarce; Mint State, rare. This is a solid Select Uncirculated piece. The eagle's leg shows the diagnostic striking weakness common to all known 1857-O quarter eagles, yet the obverse has above-average detail. The coin has bright yellow-gold color with a coppery area hovering over the shafts of the arrows. An area of planchet roughness is noted in the right obverse field. Census: 7 in 63, 2 finer (6/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25JE, PCGS# 7784)
