    Description

    Rare 1857-S Quarter Eagle, MS61
    Attractive for the Grade

1857-S $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. The 1857-S quarter eagle appears infrequently at auction, and when it does is usually in one of the About Uncirculated grades. It is estimated that only a dozen or so Mint State specimens are known today, most of which appear to be in the lower levels thereof. NGC and PCGS have certified 16 pieces in MS61, the grade of the present offering, and just 12 examples finer. Some of these are likely resubmitted coins. Both sides display orange-gold color and sharply struck design features. The fields are somewhat prooflike and yield mild contrast with the motifs, especially on the reverse. Distributed light marks do not significantly detract. This is an attractive piece for the designated grade. Census: 13 in 61, 6 finer (12/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25JF, PCGS# 7785)
