Description
Lustrous MS62 1859-S Quarter Eagle
Low-Mintage S-Mint Issue
1859-S $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. This low-mintage issue was made
after the San Francisco Mint had been open only five years, and the
facility was clearly concerned with coining its first Seated dimes,
quarters, half dollars, and dollars, all of which were produced in
larger quantities than the quarter eagle. (The double eagle coinage
was also quite large.) The quarter eagles were struck with the
old-style hub featuring larger letters and heavier arrows, although
some of the P-mint coins were struck with the new reverse. This
piece is well-produced save for minor strike weakness in the
centers. Excellent luster appears, and marks are minor and
grade-consistent. This MS62 coin is the only one so certified at
PCGS, although three examples have been graded finer
(2/10).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25JN, PCGS# 7790, GSID# 8387)
