Description

1861-S Quarter Eagle, AU58
Tied for Finest With CAC
A Conditionally Rare Date

1861-S $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. CAC. It took several decades for the 1861-S quarter eagle to develop substantial collector demand. Few numismatists paid attention to mintmarks before the 1890s, and in the early 20th century examples of the 1861-S realized only a few dollars at auction. However, by the 1940s, Mint State pieces were bringing substantial premiums at auction over their face value. In Stack's December 1944 sale of the J.F. Bell Collection, a "Brilliant Uncirculated" piece realized $27.50.

Today, the 1861-S quarter eagle is an established rarity in Mint State and is nearly as scarce in the upper AU grades. This near-Mint example is tied with one other coin for the finest with CAC endorsement, ranking it among the top options for advanced collectors. Bold detail complements remnants of luster, while rich honey-gold patina adds to the eye appeal. No distracting abrasions are evident. Population: 10 in 58, 5 finer. CAC: 2 in 58, 0 finer (10/24).(Registry values: P2)
