Description

1861-S Quarter Eagle, MS60
Low Mintage and Rare in Mint State

1861-S $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Lustrous surfaces are coated in a pleasing orange-gold hue. Weakness can be found in the highest curls, shield lines, and eagle's feathers surrounding the shield. Light abrasions are present, although none are individually distracting.

Only 24,000 quarter eagles were made in San Francisco in 1861. Most of them circulated extensively, making this issue a coveted rarity. This is especially true in Mint State. NGC has assigned the MS60 grade three times, and PCGS has done so once. Each service has only assigned higher grades four times, making for 12 certifications in Mint State grades, which likely includes duplicates.(Registry values: P2)
