1862-S $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Garrett and Guth waste no time in laying out how elusive this issue is: "The 1862-S Liberty Head quarter eagle was struck in far fewer numbers than coins of the previous few years at the San Francisco Mint. The date is very rare in any grade and extremely rare in Mint State." This MS62 example is the sole coin at that level in the combined certified population with only one PCGS piece finer (11/13). Semireflective yellow-gold surfaces have hints of lavender and green in the fields, the reverse appearing a trifle more orange. Crisply struck devices have a few light abrasions, though most of the flaws on each side are wispy. Copper spots at the rims, one between stars 12 and 13 on the obverse and another above the A in STATES on the reverse, may act as future pedigree markers.(Registry values: P2)
