Description

1865 Two and a Half, AU55
Low-Mintage Philadelphia Rarity
Few Seen in Many Years

1865 $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. The 1865 Liberty quarter eagle is one of the unsung rarities of the series. It comes from a scant mintage of only 1,520 pieces, most of which became lost to circulation or melting in the aftermath of the Civil War, when gold was hoarded in the East. PCGS estimates that only 35 to 40 pieces are extant, which is likely accurate. The combined PCGS and NGC populations, including duplications, counts just 36 grading events. And we have handled an example of this issue on only 30 prior occasions dating back to 1993. We have not seen an example since 2022, when an NGC AU50 coin changed hands.

The present Choice AU PCGS piece is finer than that example. It boasts a sharp strike and rich orange-gold patina, with ample areas of reflectivity still in the fields. Light wear and scattered abrasions are as expected, though the eye appeal is shockingly strong. PCGS Population: 2 in 55, 7 finer (11/25).(Registry values: P2)
