    Description

    Elusive AU58 1865 Quarter Eagle

1865 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Struck during the fateful final year of the Civil War, the 1865 two and a half dollar has one of the lowest mintages in the entire Liberty Head quarter eagle series. A meager 1,520 coins were struck, and the present piece is one of seven submissions at the near-Mint State level at NGC, with no Uncirculated coins graded (10/11). PCGS has certified a single Mint State example, an MS63. The present coin is among the few finest obtainable of the date, which is far rarer than, say, some more celebrated branch mint gold issues. This piece shows a bold strike over surfaces that show good remaining luster, despite slight rub on the highest points. A couple of field marks in the lower obverse field are grade-consistent and in any case not overly distracting. A marvelous example of this difficult quarter eagle issue.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25K5, PCGS# 7801)

Another major house refused the work stating it was too unique for the artist. Heritage saw that as an advantage!
