Description
Bright MS62 1866 Quarter Eagle
Very Rare in Mint State
1866 $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. This coin hails from the year that
Congress passed the Metric Act sponsored by Rep. John Adam Kasson,
chairman of the House Committee on Coinage, Weights, and Measures
and a man who would achieve later numismatic fame in conjunction
with the 1879-1880 gold stella coinage. The mintage of 1866 quarter
eagles was a stingy 3,080 pieces plus 30 proofs, and the issue is a
rare one in any grade. It is very rare in Mint State; we can
account for only nine certified appearances of finer coins than
this piece in the last dozen years. The present coin offers bright yellow-gold color. The fields are noticeably semireflective, with die striations evident in the fields under magnification. On the reverse above the eagle's head, a dark area appears to be a light grease stain struck into surface at time of manufacture. Both the die striations and a soft strike are typical for the issue. This coin is softly defined in the centers, especially on the hair curls and upper arrow and the eagle's left (facing) leg. Only light abrasions are noted overall. Census: 2 in 62, 2 finer (2/10).(Registry values: P2)
