Description

    1870-S Quarter Eagle, Sharp MS63
    Among the Finest Known

1870-S $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. The 1870-S quarter eagle undoubtedly shines in part due to the reflected light from its illustrious cousin, the fabulously rare 1870-S three dollar gold. The 1870-S quarter eagle is in an entirely different class, of course, but it is as close as most collectors will ever get to the 1870-S three. The mintage of the quarter eagle was 16,000 coins, and today examples are unavailable any finer than MS64, a level where PCGS and NGC have each certified only one piece. In MS63 this coin is one of two at PCGS, with another single example at NGC. This piece is extremely well-struck for an issue that is usually seen with a weak strike, and deep luster prevails over orange-gold surfaces that lack mentionable distractions. An impressive example of this difficult Old West issue. Population: 2 in 63, 1 finer (5/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25KG, PCGS# 7812)

    Weight: 4.18 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
