Description
Rare and Desirable AU 1875 Quarter Eagle
1875 $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. With a mintage of only 400 pieces, the 1875 quarter eagle is an issue whose rarity is well-known beyond those who specialize in gold coins. It has the second-lowest mintage of all quarter eagles, second only to the 1854-S. Akers estimated only 15 to 20 examples still exist, but that appears to be a bit low. Perhaps a more accurate number would be in the range of 20 to 25 coins. Regardless, the 1875 is very rare. This is a sharply struck piece that shows a number of small abrasions across the surfaces, as would be expected of an AU coin. However, these small abrasions do not obscure the flashy luster. Rich red-golden patina clings to the design elements and adds to the aesthetic appeal. An important opportunity for an advanced collector.(Registry values: P2)
