Description

PCGS 1875 XF 45. With a mintage of only 400 pieces, the 1875 quarter eagle is an issue whose rarity has spread beyond those who specialize in rare gold. It has the second lowest mintage of all quarter eagles, second only to the 1854-S. It is extremely rare, but earlier estimates of only 15-20 pieces extant (Akers) appear to be low. Perhaps a more accurate estimate would be in the range of 20-25 coins. This is a very sharply struck piece that shows innumerable small abrasions across the surfaces (as would be expected of an XF coin). These small abrasions tend to obscure almost all of the original prooflikeness in the fields, faint remnants of which can be still seen around some of the devices. There is also a rich reddish patina that clings to the design elements that gives the coin an attractive and colorful appearance. Few pieces have come on the market recently, and this appearance may represent the only opportunity the advanced collector will have this year to purchase this rare and highly coveted coin.
