    Description

1876 $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Quarter Eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint ratcheted up slightly in 1876, but the total number of business strikes delivered was still only 4,176 pieces. The obverse of this coin is somewhat mushy over the highpoints, while only the eagle's left leg appears deficient on the reverse. A raised "bar" on Liberty's upper neck is diagnostic to all Quarter Eagles struck for circulation this year. Both sides are richly colored in reddish-gold hues with hints of a semi-prooflike finish in the fields. Population: 1 in 60, 10 finer (12/04).
Ex: Bowers and Merena (8/02), lot 734.
