Brightly Reflective 1885 Quarter Eagle, MS64
    Mintage 800 Business Strikes

1885 $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. A memorably low production figure of 800 business strikes is the first point of attraction for the 1885 quarter eagle. The mintage figure for the double eagle was a tad lower, at 751 pieces, but the quarter eagle is sometimes overlooked. With coinage figures so low, one wonders why the Mint bothered with production at all. The focus in 1885 at the Philadelphia Mint was clearly on Morgan silver dollars, which were churned out to the amount of 17.8 million coins. But for the gold denominations, even the tiny production of 1885 gold dollars, 11,000-plus coins, pales alongside the quarter eagle and double eagle figures.
This piece appears fully deserving of a Prooflike modifier on the insert, although none is present. The strike is full, and only a few small field marks on the obverse prevent an even higher grade. The surfaces throughout show a rich, even coating of reddish-tinged coloration. Population: 7 in 64, 3 finer (2/10).(Registry values: P2)
