Description
Pretty 1887 Quarter Eagle, MS63
Low-Mintage P-Mint Rarity
1887 $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. The 1887 quarter eagle hails from a
string of unheralded low-mintage issues of the denomination in the
1860s through mid-1890s, a period when the nation's mints were
largely concentrating on other denominations of more significance,
both larger and smaller. The 1887 saw a stingy production of only
6,160 coins, and today most certified examples grade only about
AU58. The surfaces are unsurprisingly prooflike on this pretty
orange-gold piece, which under a loupe reveals the tiny abrasions
that prevent an even finer grade. This MS63 example is one of 16
pieces so graded at PCGS, with 13 finer (8/08).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25LB, PCGS# 7839, GSID# 8312)
